Your Questions, Answered

FAQs

Do you treat patients with severe health problems?

Yes. Many times patients become frustrated with the options conventional Western Medicine offers, and I am able to complement their current treatments. Please understand that my method is integrative; I believe that both Western and Eastern medicines can be used together to treat issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, IBD and other severe issues. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about specific health problems you may have.

Do you treat chronic illness?

Yes. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine in general can aid in managing the side effects from standard treatments for chronic illness. For more details, please contact me for a consultation.

What can acupuncture help with?

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine in general has been found to manage and treat a number of conditions and symptoms, including pain, headache, insomnia, infertility and digestive issues.  Acupuncture has even been shown to address symptoms related to diagnoses such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

What will my first session be like?

During the first session, you will be asked to sign standard HIPAA-compliant medical consent forms, similar to other visits with medical professionals. You will asked a series of questions that will provide a thorough picture of your overall health for both of us, and treatment options will be explained to you. You may be asked questions seemingly unrelated to the initial concerns that brought you to the office, but each question relates to a different facet of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)'s understanding of illness. Your pulse and tongue will be examined to complete the picture.

Finally, a plan of action will be devised, unique to your diagnosis. This plan may include acupuncture (which may be started during the first session), cupping, moxibustion, a Chinese herb prescription, exercise or a combination of these options. Throughout the session, please feel free to ask any questions that arise about this process.

Does acupuncture hurt?

If you've ever been accidentally stuck by a needle, lancet or pin, you may be imaging acupuncture feels similarly. Acupuncture is different. The needles are much thinner than a sewing needle or syringe. There may be a sensation that is felt as the needle enters an acupuncture point. There may be a "dull ache" that occurs in that area, or you may feel this ache in a different area (along the same "channel"). If more discomfort is felt throughout the process, it is important to let me know so that the needle can be adjusted to relieve that discomfort. Acupuncture performed correctly is a peaceful, relaxing experience.

How many sessions will it take?

The number of sessions varies greatly from condition to condition and from person to person, and therefore it is difficult to specify a number of sessions. Most people begin to feel a difference as early as the first session; a customized treatment plan will be created in an initial consultation. For further information, please contact me.
